Let me tell you one curious thing.
I’ve always had troubles when it comes to coming up with a domain name or a brand name. It is definitely not my forte and that I have proven numerous times.
So, here comes the day I realized that after 5 hours of unproductively banging my head over a certain domain name I just said, no! I decided that there should be a faster way for picking up my domain name and sought the help of some online software that is free and available to everybody.
Where do I start when coming up with a domain name and what are some mistakes that have to be avoided?
Choosing the domain name is definitely the first cornerstone!
There are a couple things you need to consider when picking up a domain name. There are certainly some mistakes that are too common and you would like to avoid them as much as possible when coming up with the domain for your own website.
If I have to pick a one single thing to pinpoint it would be that you need to avoid a long name that is hard to remember. The name should be catchy and easy to remember.
Usually meaningless words and hard to spell names should be best avoided unless it is a part of the brand strategy even then you should consider an easy to remember domain that sticks. The domain name should be easily spelled and easy to say and not stir up confusion.
A thing you need to consider is whether you aim for a small particular niche oriented website or an authority website. For just starting out a niche oriented website is a more beginner friendly as a whole. So a niche oriented website does not necessarily need to have a brand name. Most often than not you are going to be looking for a domain name that consists of a few key words.
I would suggest avoiding long tail key words for a domain name as this could be considered an exact matching and this is usually a no-no for the search engines. Having this in mind having a keyword that is specific for your niche of choice would be a good little pick so as to reading the domain name people should have a clear idea of what the website is all about.
Try to to aim for the golden mean when it comes to keywords and domain name.
One of the most important things is the Domain Extension something that can sometimes be easily overlooked and kind of goes without saying but still lets shed some light onto what we are onto here.
The Extension of your domain is the .com or .net or .us that is after the domain name.
Usually everybody goes with .com as it is the most widely used and authoritative looking extension. Generally speaking you don’t gain any advantage in the eyes of the search engines when choosing .com, .net or .org for your domain name. But you need to keep in mind that the country specific ones could bring some harm if not considered thoroughly before buying them.
A country specific extension such as .us .co.uk or any other for that matter will help you rank better and aim your website to the general public of that specific country.
